Winter Park Matreier Tauernhaus

With two signposted winter hiking trails, three cross-country ski trails and the largest artificial ice climbing park in Austria with 70 routes, Matrei in East Tyrol relies entirely on the Matreier Tauernhaus as the hub of a winter park. There is a varied range of winter hiking, cross-country skiing and ice climbing in different lengths and levels of difficulty.

Winter hiking

Matreier Tauernhaus winter hiking trail

This family hike starts at the Matreier Tauernhaus and initially leads in a south-easterly direction - past the Riepleralm - to the Daberbach. From there, you hike directly along the Tauernbach stream. Under thick ice, you can hear the gurgling and gentle rushing of the stream. At lunchtime, the gentle winter sun makes this area glisten. After 1.6 km you return to the starting point.

Wohlgemut winter hiking trail

Crunching snow by the sparkling Tauernbach stream. The 2.7 km long winter hiking trail starts shortly after the Matreier Tauernhaus. After the small bridge over the Tauernbach stream, follow the groomed path on the dam crest to the bridge at the Wohlgemuthsalmen. The crunching underfoot and the gentle murmur of the Tauernbach stream beneath the thick ice floes will bring you to absolute peace. After the bridge, you have a good view of the idyllically situated Wohlgemuthsalmen. The way back to the starting point is via the other side of the stream.

Cross-country ski trails

Tauernhaus circuit Matrei in Osttirol

The starting point of the 2.2 km long trail is located directly at the parking lot of the Matreier Tauernhaus. This easily manageable trail is very sunny and is particularly suitable for children and beginners!

Wohlgemuth trail

The trail runs from the Matreier Tauernhaus along the Tauernbach stream into the picturesque Gschlösstal valley and back again on the other side of the stream without any significant incline.

Moosrunde Matreier Tauernhaus

The varied 4.1 km long Moosrunde starts at the Tauernhaus out of the valley and runs over several bridges and past romantic barns along the Tauernbach stream. If you wish, you can tackle an ascent into the Löppwald forest or take a shortcut on the flat field.

Ice Park Osttirol

The Eispark Osttirol, the largest artificial ice park in Austria, was created in fall 2015 by the Kals mountain guides Vittorio Messini and Matthias Wurzer. The shady location enables very early icing and the wide, sloping to steep wall next to the Tauernbach stream offers optimal protection from the foehn and sun in the winter months. The 70 or so routes offer beginners and pros the perfect training ground. Please read the rules of conduct, information on opening times and more at www.eispark-osttirol.at before you arrive! Please also check the avalanche report before climbing and bring avalanche transceiver equipment!
