Description

Due to damage caused by trees being thrown, it will not be possible to walk the yard trail until 2021. However, within the weekly programme of the TVB Osttirol, the farm experiences are carried out.

The tour starts at Sillian railway station, directly by the bridge across the river Drau. We turn right before the bridge and follow the path along the right bank until we reach a crossroads where we turn right and then immediately cross the railway line. Then we keep left on a gravel farm road, which crosses the meadows in a wide arc and then leads along the edge of the forest. We take a wooden bridge across the Sägebach stream and reach the Rabland village. We stay south of the railway line and pass through the residential up the valley for about 200 metres, then we keep right and slightly uphill along an asphalted farm access road. We follow the road, and after about 400 metres we get to a chapel on the left hand side; from there we turn right uphill into a gravel path. Now, almost flat, we cross the first meadows and reach the first farms of the Tyrolean Gail and Lesachtal valley, Zenzer and Bleier. We pass through Hollbruck along the asphalted main road and turn slightly right about 100 metres after the church onto a gravel road that takes us between the barn with an imposing ash tree next to it and the residential building of the Schneiderhof farm. After the farm we keep left; the path then crosses the pastures and takes us into the forest. Shortly afterwards we walk on a forest path above the Schneider sawmill, keep left and take a small wooden bridge across the Hollbruck Talbach stream. As we follow the forest road the path now takes us out of the valley again. Now we walk slightly downhill again; after about 1 kilometre we turn right onto a well-marked path that leads up into the forest. At the next bifurcation we keep left. First we walk uphill and shortly afterwards we go downhill round a few bends and over small wooden bridges. Then we leave the forest and follow a meadow path along the edge of the forest of the "Kartitscher Schattseite", which affords views of the "Kartitscher Sonnseite". Finally, in the hamlet of Schuster, we turn right into an asphalted municipal road. After approx. 275 metres, just before the road bridge over the Gailbach, we turn left onto the hiking trail along the stream. We follow the Gailbach downstream; the path soon takes us over a wooden bridge across the stream and then along its right bank past the former mills of the "Gail Höfe" and "Wies Höfe" farms. We make a sharp right turn and walk uphill above the Wies-Hof mill and then along a gravel tractor path before turning left into Innerwies farm. Before we reach the large stable building we turn right and go past the stable onto the main road. We bear left, walk along the main road for about 90 metres and by the turn-off to St. Oswald (after the bus stop) we keep right and take the asphalted slightly uphill municipal road to St. Oswald. Directly in front of the Dorfberg inn we take a sharp right back through a narrow street (the former "Seilergasse") between the Toniger and Oberniggler farms. This takes us directly to the Mesnerhof farm in St. Oswald; outside the farm we turn left and up, and then bear right. After about 50 metres we leave the gravelled farm road and turn right into the Kartitsch meadow path ("Doaswolda Schteigile" - "Oswalder Steig"). We follow the meadow path - first across the "Mesner Feld" field, then through the forest and finally over the meadows of the "Kartitscher Sonnseite", a small-structured and particularly charming looking cultural landscape. We pass the Wieser Schupfe. After the second farm we keep left, we continue along a slightly uphill meadow path, past hayracks such as the Micheler Harpfe. Immediately after the Obertroyer farm we turn right along a narrow meadow path and down to the village centre of Kartitsch.
