Description

The Oberhauser Zirbenwald stone pine forest at the rear of Defereggental represents the largest collection of stone pine trees grouped together in the Eastern Alps with its over 170 ha, of which over 100 ha have been identified as natural forest and are subject to strict protection. The enclosed stone pine forest forms an attractive backdrop along with the cultivated valley floors and mountain pastures and is shown in more detail during the circular trail. A special feature of the Oberhauser Zirbenwald stone pine forest is the sometimes extreme boulder locations with stone pines up to 600 years old; they often grow on large boulders and surround them with their roots. Ornithologists also get their money’s worth despite the altitude of the Oberhauser Zirbenwald stone pine forest: over 30 types of bird can be found in the stone pine forest.

The Jagdhausalmen can also be visited along with the Oberhauser Zirbenwald stone pine forest further down in the valley as part of a full-day excursion (approx. 2 hour walk).
