St. Johann im Walde

Green forests, wild water

In between dense forests and steep slopes, on the banks of the roaring River Isel, the municipality of St. Johann im Walde is located in the valley Iseltal in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Especially the unique nature with the forests surrounding the municipality characterizes the townscape of St. Johann im Walde. The 276-soul community is traversed by River Isel, the last free-flowing glacial river in the Eastern Alps. Thanks to its geographically privileged location, the market town of Matrei i n Osttirol and the Osttirol district capital of Lienz can be reached by car or bus in just a few minutes. Walking through the small town, you will notice several beautiful, sacral buildings like the parish church of St. John the Baptist as well as right next to it three interesting chapels.

The optimal location of the apartments in St. Johann im Walde makes it possible to directly access the cycle path Iseltalradweg in summer and the cross-country skiing trail Iselloipe in winter.

The locals always find innovative ways to make use of the advantage that the municipality is traversed by the Isel. St. Johannis the starting point for rafting and kayaking tours in the wild waters of the glacial river towards Lienz. A walk or a hike along the banks of the Isel guarantees pure relaxation and those who prefer a bit higher are recommended to try the hiking trails to Oberleibnig, Michelbach and Oblaß. These places are idyllic hamlets in the midst of unspoilt natural surroundings and water-abundant recreational areas. Oberleibnig can also be reached by cable car from St. Johann. Once at the top, you will not only be able to enjoy a magnificent panorama but also a managed snack station with a sun-drenched terrace. If you have the necessary stamina, you can start from Oberleibnig to a long hike to Mount Hochschober, which gave the Schober Group its name. River Isel’s beautiful banks in the valley offer a bike path for cyclists.

There is no shortage of recreational opportunities in St. Johann im Walde even in winter. If there is enough snow, a cross-country ski trail is available in the idyllic village, and in front of the clubhouse you can enjoy an ice rink. With the free ski buses, skiers can quickly reach nearby ski resorts such as the Grossglockner Resort Kals / Matrei or the Lienz areas of Zettersfeld and Hochstein.
