Nußdorf-Debant

Unspoiled nature and beautiful landscapes

Although the municipality is located in the heart of the Lienz Basin, Nussdorf-Debant offers an enormous amount of untouched nature, more than half of it is located in Hohe Tauern National Park. Above all, the beautiful and water-abundant Debanttal valley plays a central role in this context. Valued by hikers and mountain bikers alike, the valley is traversed by the eponymous stream Debantbach and, with a total length of 16 km, is the longest, self-contained alpine valley in Austria. The Debantbach, which can well be called a natural gem, repeatedly branches at the end of the valley between rugged stones and lush meadows, before the stream flows through the district of Debant at the valley exit. In the warm months, beautiful bays invite visitors to linger here. The district of Nussdorf is located a bit higher at the foot of the Nussdorf mountain and provides many beautiful walkways and paths.

In the Middle Ages, the region was part of the Slavic Principality of Carantania and the county Gorizia. In 1501, it was incorporated with the county of Tyrol. But Nussdorf-Debant is not only historically very interesting. The community flourished after the Second World War, mainly due to business settlements and many people moving to the urban sprawl of Lienz. Today, Nussdorf-Debant is considered to be the municipality with the third highest population in Osttirol with 3366 inhabitants (April 2019). The beautiful sacral buildings represent a municipality that combines tradition and modernity in an interesting way. The oldest of these buildings is the parish church of Nussdorf, which was first officially mentioned in 1274.

Hiking in the idyllic Debanttal

Thanks to its convenient location, Nussdorf-Debant also offers numerous recreational opportunities. In summer, the region can be explored on one of the many hiking trails or by bike. For those who prefer the latter variant, the popular Drau Cycle Path is in relatively quick reach. Above all, tennis fans will get their money worth in this municipality at the valley floor - in addition to the outdoor tennis courts, there is also a spacious indoor tennis court.

Even during the winter months, the beautiful landscape in the municipality’s surroundings invite many outdoor fans to drop by. Nothing stands in the way of an entertaining skiing experience, the Lienz ski areas Hochstein and Zettersfeld are only a few minutes to drive. A visit to Lienz's historic city centre is also worth all year and the place is not far away as Nussdorf-Debant is after all a neighbouring town of sunny Lienz.
