In the Middle Ages, the region was part of the Slavic Principality of Carantania and the county Gorizia. In 1501, it was incorporated with the county of Tyrol. But Nussdorf-Debant is not only historically very interesting. The community flourished after the Second World War, mainly due to business settlements and many people moving to the urban sprawl of Lienz. Today, Nussdorf-Debant is considered to be the municipality with the third highest population in Osttirol with 3366 inhabitants (April 2019). The beautiful sacral buildings represent a municipality that combines tradition and modernity in an interesting way. The oldest of these buildings is the parish church of Nussdorf, which was first officially mentioned in 1274.
