Sunny city Lienz

A mix between urban life and nature paradise

charming small town, flanked by wooded ridges and the bizarre summit formations of the Lienz Dolomites. A place of high quality of life, where "the South begins". An urban and yet close-to-nature paradise where the sun frequently shines. All in all, simply a small town called Lienz, home of around 12,000 citizens.

Lienz is appreciated and loved by Osttiroleans and holidaymakers likewise. Especially in summer, the beautiful town stands out by its Mediterranean flair. Here, life can still be enjoyed to the fullest, even the locals often feel like being on vacation.

An important share in this perception is owed to the averagely 2,000 hours of sunshine per year - so Lienz is the ideal antidote for vitamin D deficiency. And since man does not live on the sun, the south and the Alpine air alone, Lienz also has much else to offer. The Lienz basin is wonderfully embedded in the picturesque Osttirol - the “AlpineTyrol", which is certainly not short of gorgeous landscapes and mountain ranges.

Summer in Lienz

When it comes to leisure activities, Lienz can be proud of what it has to offer. Coming from the west, the Drava Cycle Path leads through the south of the city and on to Carinthia. For more action-packed rides on the bike it is recommended to visit the bike park Lienz am Hochstein, where several varied trails - such as the Peter Sagan Trail or the Alban Lakata Trail - are available. Relaxation and pure relaxation are guaranteed at the modernised public pool Lienz Dolomitenbad. As the name already suggests, you can enjoy the fantastic view of the Lienz Dolomites when jumping into the cool water or while you are "sweating" in the sauna area.

By the way, particularly brave people who are not afraid to leap into the cold Lake Laserzsee near the hut Karlsbaderhütte in the hiking and climbing area of the Lienz Dolomites can really "bathe in the Dolomites". Countless paths and destinations wait to be explored around Lienz. With the cable cars of the Lienzer Bergbahnen Hochstein and Lienzer Bergbahnen Zettersfeld you can quickly get from the rather urban valley floor to the untamed Osttirolean wild. On the adventure mountain Hochstein you can spend an unforgettable day in the largest climbing park of Tyrol and in the neighbouring petting zoo. The 2.7 kilometre long Alpine Coaster "Osttirodler" takes you downhills towards the sunny city in winter and in summer.

TIP: In the hiking area Zettersfeld children and families can expect entertainment on 15 play and adventure stages on the family park Zettersfeld.

Winter in Lienz

During the winter months, not only the landscape and the mountains around Lienz are turned into a romantic winter wonderland, the city itself also radiates a special flair - especially in the Advent season. On cold winter days, when the Christmas lighting in the streets is turned on and the city centre smells like roasted almonds, people enjoy a warming mulled wine from the stalls of the Advent market on the main square in Lienz.

One or the other hand-made Osttirolean product is bought an the Advent calendar created by local by artists on the facade of the Liebburg can be marvelled at. The Advent decoration in the heart of the city is complemented by atmospheric music. When the Advent market closes its gates, the Dreikönigsmarkt market with local stalls opens on the Johannesplatz in Lienz. Here you can get delicacies, artisan craftwork and genuine products from the region and elsewhere. The winter market "Osttirol de Luxe" is also a definite must when you visit Lienz in winter! 14 differently themed gourmet pavilions offer the best cuisine from Osttirol.

Throughout the winter, the two ski areas Hochstein and Zettersfeld invite you to ski on their slopes. Here you ride down the sun-kissed slopes on Zettersfeld or the World Cup slope on Hochstein. In addition to the fantastic mountains, you will always enjoy a view onto the city of Lienz - the model city for a better life!

Even though Lienz is constantly changing it always preserves its character. Thus, there have been numerous improvements, traffic calming measures and projects to revive the city centre in recent decades. During the warmer months, the weekly concerts on the main square in Lienz invite people to linger. Also the street festival "Olala" and of course the extreme sports event par excellence - the Dolomitenmann - attract numerous visitors to this city in the Dolomites every year. Speaking of the main square: the Liebburg there is a a striking landmark of Lienz. Another highlight is Bruck Castle. Built by the Counts of Görz, the castle has been towering over the sunny city of Lienz for more than 750 years.

The former bastion now houses a museum and is a popular venue for concerts and events in summer. It is worthwhile exploring Lienz and its eventful past on a guided city tour along the old city wall and past numerous monuments and sights. However, you cannot only discover Lienz and the region but also taste it. On the weekends, the traditional city market is held in the upper old town, where culinary treats from all over Osttirol are offered. Also various products of manufacturers from the region can be acquired there. In Lienz shopping is very special and enjoyable anyway: here you can still find enthusiastic and passionate shops, craft shops and inviting boutiques which don’t exist anymore elsewhere.
