Leisach

A true paradise close to Lienz

At the gates of the sunny city of Lienz, the community of Leisach with the Lienzer Klause watches over the entrance to the Hochpustertal Valley. The centre rests on a talus, which has moved towards the Drava. The latter flows through Leisach and, thanks to its beautiful, secluded coves, facilitates recreation in the immediate vicinity of the village. At the south-western edge of the municipal area, the local Leisacher mountain, the Spitzkofel, towers with impressive 2717 meters.

The local area provides many listed buildings, as well as the narrowing of the valley at the Lienzer Klause, which was recognized as a "secular" monument and is considered a particularly historical place. Here, an event not unimportant to the Tyrolean identity took place:

On 08.08.1809 the Tyrolean and Sextner Landsturm were able to stop twenty-fold superior French and Italian forces. Today's ruins testify to these events and is considered particularly worth seeing. The most important sacral building is the medieval parish church in the main village. A popular hiking destination and yet an insider's tip is the beautiful Reiterkirchl on the Reiteralm, built in 1849. It provides a wonderful view onto the varied mountains of the Lienz Dolomites on the other side, which regularly "glow" in Leisach’s sunset.

Warm summer days can be spent in a quiet and idyllic atmosphere in the Leisach’s Waldschwimmbad (public swimming pool in the woods). Moreover, several popular excursion destinations, such as the challenging Goggsteig and the family-friendly climbing paradise Galitzenklamm, are in direct proximity to Leisach. Especially the Galitzenklamm is a real insider tip in Osttirol! A via ferrata specially arranged for families, a versatile climbing world, a waterfall observation circuit with water playground and a snack station promise a varied daytrip or holiday. In Leisach you can also join the popular Drau Cycle Path, which leads further downstream towards Lienz and Upper Carinthia. In neighbouring Lienz, skiers can carve down the slopes on two boards in the ski areas of the Lienz Bergbahnen (mountain railways).
