Kartitsch

A holiday destination high above the sea

Well sheltered between the foothills of the Lienz Dolomites in the north and the Carnic ridge in the south, the village of Kartitsch is located at 1,356 meters above sea level in the Tyrolean Gailtal. The unique mountain scenery in fascinating and cultivated natural surroundings ensures lasting memories for visitors. Not without a reason the Tyrolean Gailtal-Lesachtal with mountaineering village Kartitsch is one of the most beautiful high valleys in the Alps. The hamlets of Hollbruck and St. Oswald included, the almost seven-kilometre-long municipal area stretches across the idyllic centre of the village via Rauchenbach to the Kartitscher Sattel. Kartitsch and its hamlets also accommodate some listed, mostly sacral, buildings.

These include, among others, the beautiful parish church "St. Leonhard ", the pilgrimage church " Our Lady Mariahilf "and the chapel " St. Oswald ". The unique landscape with cultivated fields and lush meadows is mainly owed to hardworking Osttirol farmers. No matter when you visit Kartitsch: the place and the entire region radiate an enchanting atmosphere in every season - holiday fun is guaranteed!

In the warmer months, the mountaineer and hiker’s paradise provides numerous varied tours. The municipality, which is one of the Osttirol mountaineering villages, is the starting point to the Gailtal High Route and the Carnic High Route also passes through the community area of Kartitsch. Beautiful hikes through unique landscapes are also offered by the tours to lodge Obstansersee Hütte and lodge Filmoor Hütte.

When it turns winter in Osttirol and the area around Kartitsch becomes a snow-covered winter wonderland, the municipality lives up to its description as Austria’s first "winter hiking village". Countless winter hiking trails are just waiting to be explored. Whether sun or shade, demanding or leisurely - there is something for every taste. Skiing enthusiasts will also get their money worth in Kartitsch.

Next to the Dorfberg lift, where night skiing is regularly offered, the village also has a small ski lift on the snow-guaranteed shady side, where especially beginners can exercise their skiing skills. Cross-country skiing is extremely popular in the Tyrolean Gail Valley, which is why one of the most beautiful high-altitude trails in the Alpine region meanders from Kartitsch towards Obertilliach through the wildly romantic landscape. Along the trail you can marvel at the unique picturesque untouched nature around Kartitsch. A little higher, the Dorfberg high-altitude trail leads through lonely forests and pristine nature - fantastic views guaranteed!
