Experience hospitality at first hand

The Villgraten valley, a side valley of the Pustertal Valley in Osttirol, is one of the most pristine natural and cultural landscapes in the Alpine region. The landscape with the striking timber buildings on the steeply sloping mountain meadows testifies that this high valley is still characterized by alpine farming. The Villgraters are rightly proud of their centuries-old traditions; sustainable farming is a priority for them. So, the Villgrater hospitableness, combined with beautiful landscapes and groups of typical Alpine lodges, makes holidaymakers’ hearts beat faster. The Villgraten valley has been inhabited for almost 900 years and now has nearly 2,000 inhabitants. The Innervillgraten plain was once heavily overgrown with sycamore, which is the reason why the alpine high valley is also known as the "Valley of the Maple".

Tourism in this valley tends to be eco-friendly, large concrete hotels and mass tourism are rare here. Not without a reason, one of the local marketing slogans is they advertise here "Come to us, we have nothing". The focus here is more on close contact to visitors in manageable but homelike accommodations. This is also one of the reasons why the Villgraten Valley is one of 20 Austrian "Mountaineering Villages", which are committed to natural and sustainable tourism. Thanks to eco-friendly tourism, the originality and beauty of this unique high valley can still be experienced with all your senses. The village of Innervillgraten, which has been preserved in a particularly genuine way, relies on gentle tourism, which can be optimally combined with agriculture and customs. Because of its rather remote location, Innervillgraten with its distinctive parish church of St. Martin has before 1956 not even been accessible all year.

Summer in Innervillgraten

In the alpine village of Ausservillgraten, which is characterized by agriculture, and the adjoining Winkeltal, you can enjoy nature-oriented and relaxing holidays to the fullest. Heinfels-based local poet Franz Josef Kofler once called the Villgrater's most beautiful property the rustic alpine huts, which, set in fragrant meadows, guarantee relaxation and deceleration high above the valley. These unique arrangements of rustic huts, surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, are understandably regarded coveted holiday homes. Many of the varied hiking trails lead across lush alpine meadows, passing by these huts. A particularly worthwhile destination is the Oberstaller Alm - a listed alpine village with 18 rustic alpine huts, which can also be rented as holiday homes. Another popular destination is the small village of "Kalkstein" - a tranquil hamlet of Innervillgraten. There the pilgrimage church Maria Schnee, built in 1660, characterizes the landscape in the midst of wild nature.

 

Passionate hikers and mountaineers can expect the long-distance hiking trail "Herzass" to be a special highlight in the Villgratental valley. On five legs, this 70-kilometer-long route passes by 50 peaks around the two mountain villages of Ausser- and Innervillgraten. They have always been heart-shaped, these 50 mighty peaks that have been lovingly embracing the idyllic Villgraten valley since the year one. The route owes its name to this circumstance. In addition to the "Herzass" round, a cross-border hike on the former smugglers' paths to Gsies is also worthwhile. In summer, nature in the Villgraten valley can also be explored by mountain bike or e-bike. During a visit to the so-called Wegelate Saw, a Venetian sawmill, you can marvel at the only Venetian gang saw still running on water.

In addition to dozens of ski tours through varied mountain ranges, the winter holiday options the Villgratental valley provides are extremely varied, especially for those who wish to escape everyday hassle in their holidays. The ski-tracks with guaranteed snow in Innervillgraten also offer plenty of respective opportunities. Innervillgraten moreover provides two wild-romantic toboggan runs - the Sandberg toboggan run and the illuminated run Kalksteiner Weg. Children and skiing newbies can use the Stauderlift in Innervillgraten to exercise carving. From the Villgraten valley, the valley stations of Sillian and Ausservillgraten of the ski resort Skizentrum Hochpustertal can be reached quickly. However, if you just want to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, you are well advised to take a relaxing snowshoe hike through the unique Villgrater mountains.
