Außervillgraten

Cosy shelter and unspoiled nature

Villgratental

The Villgraten valley, a side valley of the Osttirol Pustertal Valley, is one of the most pristine natural and cultural landscapes in the Alpine region. The landscape with the striking timber buildings on the steeply sloping mountain meadows testifies that this high valley is still characterized by alpine farming. The Villgraters are rightly proud of their centuries-old traditions; sustainable farming is a priority for them. So, the Villgrater hospitableness, combined with beautiful landscapes and groups of typical Alpine lodges, makes holidaymakers’ hearts beat faster. The Villgraten valley has been inhabited for almost 900 years and now has nearly 2,000 inhabitants. The Innervillgraten plain was once heavily overgrown with sycamore, which is the reason why the alpine high valley is also known as the "Valley of the Maple".

Summer in Außervillgraten

In the alpine village of Ausservillgraten, which is characterized by agriculture, and the adjoining Winkeltal, you can enjoy nature-oriented and relaxing holidays to the fullest. Heinfels-based local poet Franz Josef Kofler once called the Villgrater's most beautiful property the rustic alpine lodges, which, set in fragrant meadows, guarantee relaxation and deceleration high above the valley. These unique arrangements of rustic huts, surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, are understandably regarded coveted holiday homes. Many of the varied hiking trails lead across lush alpine meadows, passing by these huts.

Ausservillgraten also is the starting point of long-distance hiking trail "Herzass" -Villgratental.

On this 70-kilometer-long route, you will hike along the fifty impressive peaks that enclose the two mountaineering villages Innervillgraten and Ausservillgraten in a heart shape. Unique impressions of the Villgraten valley and its peculiarities can be gathered. Families will particularly enjoy a trip to the Thurntaler, where e.g. three lakes make a one of various beautiful destinations that are accessible for hikers in short time. The Wurzerhof in nearby Winkeltal is also a worthwhile destination. In the working farm and museum, a corn mill, an old sawmill, a blacksmith’s shop and a chapel can be explored. This entire setting is a listed building. Moreover, in the middle of the idyllic landscape of the Winkeltal in Ausservillgraten, a new, Kneipp facility adapted to nature has been built. In summer, nature in and around Ausservillgraten can of course be explored by mountain bike or e-bike.

Ausservillgraten in winter

Among other things, numerous ski tour options in Ausservillgraten facilitate varied winter activities, especially for those who want to escape everyday hassle in their holidays. In addition, a horse-drawn sleigh ride in the romantic Winkeltal or a toboggan ride on the illuminated Tilliachalmweg toboggan run are also available. In the town centre you can enjoy an ice rink. The unique Villgrater mountains can be best explored on a wild-romantic snowshoe hike. Particularly advantageous in Ausservillgraten is the fact that the idyllic village with its valley run and a four-chairlift provides direct access to the ski resort Skizentrum Hochpustertal, where 45 snow-covered kilometres of slopes, coupled with stunning panoramic views, make skiers hearts beat faster.

Tourism in this valley tends to be eco-friendly, large concrete hotels and mass tourism are rare here. The focus is more on close contact to visitors in manageable but homelike accommodations. This is also one of the reasons why the Villgraten Valley is one of 20 Austrian "Mountaineering Villages", which are committed to natural and sustainable tourism. Thanks to eco-friendly tourism, the originality and beauty of this unique high valley can still be experienced with all your senses.
