Summer in Kals

All through the year, the Hohe Tauern National Park shows its best side in and around Kals, its beauty and diversity seemingly endless. During the summer months, the idyllically located community comes up trumps with the fact that Kals has traditionally been the home of many mountain and hiking fans, and is thus also often called a hiking and mountaineering paradise. Rightly so, as is clearly shown by 250 km of hiking trails and footpaths in the valley area and the secondary valleys. Countless hiking and climbing routes are scattered around Kals with the Dorfertal valley, Teischitztal valley, Ködnitztal valley and Lesach valley. Ködnitz Valley in particular knows how to impress with its unique views of the king of mountains, Grossglockner, all year round.

 

Along the trails, the numerous huts and lodges amidst Hohe Tauern National Park provide locals and guests with hearty fare and refreshing drinks. The Kalser cable cars (up to 2,400 m) or the Glocknerstrasse Road (up to 2,000 m) provide convenient access to the starting points for easy to challenging high-altitude hikes or alpine summit ascents. You can choose to have local mountain guides accompany you, who thanks to their thorough training and long experience in alpine terrain guarantee unforgettable mountain adventures all through the year. Since the opening of the Bikepark Grossglockner Resort, new trails combined with culinary highlights and the special mountain backdrop also delight the mountainbiking scene.

 

Kals am Großglockner in winter

When winter sets in, the hiking paradise at the foot of Grossglockner is transformed into a veritable winter wonderland. Kals has direct access to the Grossglockner Resort Kals/Matrei – with 41.6 kilometres of optimally groomed slopes the largest ski area in Osttirol. Whether you're out and about at more than 2,400 m with one of the modern chair lifts, heading down into the valley on skis along a valley run or enjoying a cosy break in the unique Adlerlounge – here stress-free and enjoyable skiing holidays are the order of the day.

 

In addition to many kilometres of slope, Kals boasts countless ski touring options for all skill levels as well as cross-country ski trails with reliable snow conditions. Special impressions of the landscape and fauna around Kals can be had on a wild and romantic snowshoe hike together with national park rangers. One thing is certain: Here at the foot of the King of mountains, winter shows off its very best side.
