Open Air Museum at Kalserbach

Water powered mills were widespread in East Tyrol until 50 years ago. Due to agricultural restructuring, they have largely lost their function and have therefore gradually decayed. Thanks to the owners' commitment and with support from Hohe Tauern National Park, Kals am Grossglockner has managed to maintain six stick mills.
The ingenuity helped the farmers to replace the ever-returning work of the grinding process by technically simple means using hydropower. Miller Paul will show you how grain is turned into flour.
Eventually, you can also take some organic flour home with you. Show presentations are very popular, perhaps also because the nature-friendly hydropower use of the old days has a touch of nostalgia. The stick mills can be approached from Kals / Großdorf, following the forest path to the Taurer (here, you will also find the ecological education trail for children).
