Oberhauser Zirbenwald

excursion/trip for children
various sights
Nationalpark Sehenswürdigkeit

The Oberhauser Zirbenwald is the largest closed stone pine forest in the Eastern Alps. The very slow-growing stone pine can grow up to 1,000 years old, reach a diameter of up to two meters and a height of just over 20 meters. Its cones are used to make special schnapps and liqueurs. Wood carvers in the region almost exclusively use the soft Swiss stone pine wood for their works of art.

The Oberhaus wildlife observation tower in Defereggental also offers a special nature experience for young and old. High above the treetops, the 22-metre-high tower invites you to let your gaze wander over the National Park Hohe Tauern and the largest closed stone pine forest in the Eastern Alps. Looking over the treetops, with a little luck and patience you might spot an eagle, bearded vulture, deer, chamois or marmot.

The best way to experience the charming backdrop of the closed stone pine forest is on a walk along the Oberhauser Zirbenwald nature and culture trail.
