In 1936, Sillian, a market town in the Ottirol Pustertal valley, decided to move with the times and no longer stand in the way of progress. The "Catholic Workers' Association" of Sillian opened the "Grenzlichtspiele" on the first floor of an old barracks. Not without certain guidelines, of course. For example, there is always a "Catholic film review" for the films shown in the theater. This provides information on which films are more or less suitable for young people.
Over the decades, the small cinemas in particular lost importance. This was not only, but also, due to the advent of television and video and was no different in Sillian. As a result, the "Grenzlichtspiele" closed for good in 1989.
Gernot Vinatzer from Sillian, together with his friend, photographer Ando Fuchs, brought the "Grenzlichtspiele" back to life in 2021, albeit not in its original function. The former cinema is now a museum dedicated to film, cinema and photography.
Today, you can admire many old finds from the "Grenzlichtspiele" as well as exhibits from Vinatzer's private collection in the cinema and photography museum. You could say that a piece of local history is told here. In addition, technical equipment from times long past, film posters and much more provide an insight into the world of film and photography. Vinatzer explains the technical equipment like no other and creates a special ambience with many beautiful stories.
