A train station conveys the constant back and forth between wandering off into the distance and being at home, between longing and habit. The interaction between these poles keeps us traveling.
This is also the case for Karl Nothdurfter. Even as a young boy, he watched the hustle and bustle at Lienz railroad station from his parents' house. Today, he guides us through the old Lienz boiler house, a listed building, with fascinating stories. This is where the "Association of Railway Friends in Lienz" runs the railroad museum.
On around 1800 m2, it is not only railroad enthusiasts who get their money's worth. The large building houses rare examples of steam-powered locomotives from the 20th century, some of which can be entered. In addition to the older steam locomotives, several diesel and electric locomotives as well as special vehicles such as crane and silo wagons for transporting grain are on display. The presentation is rounded off by various wagons and goods wagons.
In 1871, the Villach - Franzensfeste (South Tyrol) railroad line was put into operation with a length of around 212 km. At that time, simple machines, water and coal ushered in a technical era in the region that revolutionized economic and social life in the truest sense of the word. We owe much of our current prosperity to the ingenuity and achievements of that time.
The beauty of the railroad museum: you are right in the middle of it, not just there!
