Take a journey through history in Obertilliach
This museum has recently been restored in the "Lugger" barn in the historic centre of Obertilliach and displays an impressive collection of carriages and sleighs from various historical periods, from the farm-tool carrying peasant's cart through wedding carriages to a funeral coach.
An English lady's carriage, a magnificent Landauer, a hearse, a Pustertal valley country wagon, a Hungarian hunting wagon or a baker's wagon from Sillian - museum director Gernot Vinatzer knows the different types of carriages and their areas of use inside out.
"The heyday of nostalgic horse-drawn carriages began at the end of the 18th century. At that time, individual carriage designs were developed for different areas of use," says Vinatzer. A black hearse is particularly eye-catching: "Such carriages were used at the Viennese court, whereby black hearses only accompanied the reigning monarch on his last journey. All other personalities of the court were transported in red carriages."
In addition to winter sleighs and over 20 horse-drawn carriages from the period between 1880 and 1930, the carriage and local history museum in the historic village center of Obertilliach also houses a collection of farming tools. They document the development and change of agriculture in the Lesach Valley. Most of the carriages on display come from the greater Tyrol area. They are each explained with information texts in German and Italian.
