Exhibition "Under the spell of the Großglockner"
200 years after the first ascent of the Großglockner, the highest mountain in Austria, the Glocknerhaus in Kals was inaugurated in 2000 with the exhibition "In the Grip of the Großglockner." Witnesses from a long-gone era tell of the first people who dared to venture into the remotest valleys of the Eastern Alps over 4000 years ago. A stone axe, animal bones from prehistoric cult sites, as well as silver coins from the Roman era are presented alongside informative texts and video productions. In the second room, there is a walkable map and a depiction of the fantastic natural surroundings of the Glockner village. Marmots, wall runners, and the chamois, which is so representative of this Kals mountain world, as well as other animals and plants of the high mountains are introduced.
In another room, everything revolves around people. Such an impressive landscape naturally shapes its inhabitants. The hard work on steep mountain pastures, extreme winters, and for a long time, an archaic life in seclusion have given rise to a number of religious and secular customs. Two rooms are also dedicated to Kals mountain guides, the "black mountain," and alpinism in general.
